For those of you who think that Bel Canto is just pretty singing, I encourage a hearing of Il Pirata. The heroine, Imogene’s vocal writing is more akin to Abigaille in Nabucco than Norma with wide vocal leaps and frequent visits to the chest range. For a role that requires the control of Bellini and the fire of early Verdi, it should come as no surprise that Maria Callas is stellar. She is supported by a competent cast, the standout being the Adele of Regina Safarty.
