In the title role, Christa Ludwig is utterly convincing, unleashing soaring high notes that would be the envy of many sopranos, while inviting the listener to revel in her velvety middle register. Her emotional intensity is unflinching, making her anguish in the prison scene palpably real. Gottlob Frick brings a warmly human presence to Rocco, and Walter Berry infuses Pizarro with a sleek, menacing charm. Fritz Uhl may not match the magnetic force of his colleagues, but he offers a Florestan marked by admirable vocal assurance. At the podium, Herbert von Karajan delivers a masterclass in dramatic pacing, drawing both clarity and urgency from Beethoven's score.
