Beethoven: Fidelio
Bjoner, Spiess, Kélémen, Cava, Miljakovic; Klobucar
Napoli, 1971
$9.95
Description:
Ingrid Bjoner makes an ideal Leonora, combining clarity of tone with a touch of steely strength. Her performance is both poised and emotionally engaged. Ludovic Spiess, as Florestan, offers a lyrical yet forceful presence that pairs well with Bjoner. Together, they suggest a vocal balance that wouldn’t be out of place as Donna Anna and Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni.
Berislav Klobucar, always a commanding figure in the pit, leads with energy and conviction. His reading of the Leonora No. 3 Overture before the final scene is especially stirring.
There are some brief interruptions, and the sound quality is only fair, but the performance still makes a strong impression.
