Anja Silja was originally slated to sing this performance but had to withdraw, paving the way for Gladys Kuchta, who steps in with assurance. Though she occasionally struggles with the most stratospheric moments, Kuchta offers a warm tone and Wagnerian weight that remains free of harshness, giving her Leonore an appealing strength. Vilem Pribyl brings welcome youthful lyricism to Florestan, while Kurt Böhme lends fatherly warmth to Rocco. Georg Solti draws an ideal balance of fiery romanticism and classical elegance from the orchestra. The sound is very good.
