Pros:
- If you are looking for Bach in period performance this recording is not for you, however, if the idea of hearing Bach's profound oratorio delivered on an epic scale under the tasteful yet unapologetically romantic leadership of Erich Kleiber, you are in for a real treat.
- The soloists deliver equal parts Wagnerian gravitas and baroque restraint.
- Koloman von Pataky is one of the finest Evangelists I have ever heard.
Cons:
- There are a number of passages in this recording which are marred by wavering pitch to the point that it sounds more like Stravinsky than Bach.
