Wagner: Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg - Adam, Bode, Cox, Sotin, Hirte, Reynolds, Weikl; Varviso. Bayreuth, 1974

$18.95

Description:

This run of Meistersinger was recorded for Philips. The cast on this broadcast is nearly identical, with one notable difference: Theo Adam sings Hans Sachs (on the commercial recording, it was Karl Ridderbusch). Adam delivers a mellifluous Hans Sachs, while Jean Cox, a Bayreuth mainstay throughout the 1970s, shows that even after multiple Siegfrieds, he could still deliver moments of sublime lyricism. Hans Sotin's Veit Pogner may be some of the most beautiful Wagner singing I have ever heard. Although the sound is generally very good, the last half of Act II is marred by static.
