Pros:

  • Even if you don't self-identify as a bel canto lover (as I myself do not), I am betting that you will still find yourself unable to resist this performance of Maria Stuarda which comes as close to perfection as any performance I have heard in a long time.
  • Pauline Tinsley, making her NY debut, is a phenomenon as Elisabetta. She brings all of the power she brought to roles like Elektra and Salome, along with thrilling coloratura, and seemingly endless high notes.
  • You get the sense that Beverly Sills knew she would have to work all the harder to stand out next to Tinsley, and she does not disappoint. Her Maria is both virtuosic and deeply connected to the drama.
  • A fun aneCDote about this performance: Tinsley was reprimanded by Sills for taking the high note with her at the end of Act II. Apparently there was only room for one diva on that stage...

Cons:

  • Sound is just a bit distant.
