Weber’s Oberon has languished in obscurity for many years and this performance, does very little to change that. It’s charming, fleet and elegant, a perfectly pleasant way to spend an evening, but it is far from dramatically involving. The extensive cuts to the score and lack of linking dialogue, as well as a fairly indecipherable Italian translation, lend to further confusion. Oh well, the music is indeed lovely. Anita Cerquetti nails’ Reiza’s challenging arias, and Petre Munteanu, as her lover, blasts his way attractively through most of his music. The supporting cast is largely charming, and the sound is generally fine.
