Amy Shuard makes for a passionate Sieglinde in this performance of Die Walküre's first act from 1962. Heard to her best effect in ”Der Männer Sippe,” Shuard gives the sense that Sieglinde has survived thus far by telling this story to herself night after night, and she is transfixed in the power it holds over her life. As Siegmund, Ronald Dowd, is a lighter voice than one usually hears in this role and is slightly underpowered in his "Winterstürme". He is much better in the narration of Siegmund's woeful past. Michael Langdon's black bass makes for a flawlessly threatening Hunding, and Norman del Mar whips up a storm (literally) in the prelude before giving way to a shimmering rendition of the arrival of spring. The sound is very clear, if a little unsteady.
