Many noted vocal coaches will tell you that older traditions of singing were preserved behind the iron curtain.   This performance shows that opera was flourishing in Russia during communism.  Galina Vishnevskaya managed to get out and have an international career.  She is quite extraordinary in the title role.  Here colleagues show that if they had had the access to the west they probably would have enjoyed singing on some of the great stages.  The sound is excellent as is the performance however 90 seconds are missing during Cavaradossi's entrance in Act III.
