L'Elisir d'amore
Gaetano Donizetti (1797–1848)
DESCRIPTION
While L'Elisir d'amore has traditionally been viewed as a tenor’s vehicle—its protagonist Nemorino occupies the stage for the better part of the opera, tasked with two major arias alongside demanding ensemble writing—it is Adriana Maliponte who ultimately walks away with the show. Despite the earnest and often appealing efforts of Ugo Benelli, whose Nemorino is serviceable if not especially distinctive, it is Maliponte’s Adina who emerges with persuasive authority. Her portrayal is both sumptuous and delightfully poised, offering a model of bel canto refinement that is not only technically assured but unfailingly musical.
