Bizet: Carmen

Carmen
Georges Bizet (1838–1875)
DESCRIPTION
This performance is historically significant for many reasons, the most notable being the inclusion of two African-American singers in lead roles. In 1962, at a time when representation like this was rare in Hollywood, this was no small milestone. Shirley Verrett, already a force of nature by this time, delivers a Carmen that is slightly more restrained but no less complex. George Shirley's honey-voiced tenor gives José a more naïve quality, making his ultimate descent into obsession all the more striking. Thomas Schippers conducts with his trademark precision and drive, favoring quick tempos.
