Strauss: Salome - Nilsson, Uhl, Hoffman, Waechter; Sebastian. Buenos Aires, 1965

Listen to a Sample:

Birgit Nilsson shied away from Salome until she was well into her forties.  Although, in years, she was well past the age of the part, she manages to come across as a teenager with the voice of Isolde.   There is absolutely no evidence of any kind of strain in her production and the limits of her voice seem endless.   She manages a beautifully spun pianissimo at "Und das Geheimnis der Liebe."   Eberhard Waechter is booming as Jochanaan.  The rest of the cast includes such veterans as Fritz Uhl and Grace Hoffmann, but the evening belongs to Nilsson.  The sound is outstanding.

BONUS: Birgit Nilsson sings "Allein! Weh, ganz allein!" from Elektra
