Elena Souliottis has inspired much fascination among opera fans over the years from her auspicious New York debut as Anna Bolena in 1967 with no other than Maria Callas in the audience, to her steep decline while still in her twenties.  Despite the brilliance of her early career I always thought that people were unfair about some of the later recordings.  True they lack the ease and power of the early days but she was always a committed performer and manages the tricky parts admirably.  Who would not trade a few ragged high notes for the smooth tones that she was still capable of supplying.  This compilation offers a good mix of the early and later periods including excerpts from Nabucco, Un Ballo in maschera, Otello, Cavalleria Rusticana, Manon Lescaut, La fanciulla del West and La Straniera. I invite everyone to leave their thoughts about this great artist.
