Pros:

  • Lotte Rysanek will change the way you understand the title role of Madama Butterfly. Her silvery soprano shimmers in the "Spira sul mare" (complete with d-flat) and soars in the final moments. (She clearly shares a few genes with her sister Leonie in the temperament department as well.)
  • Gertrude Jahn definitely deserves a shout-out for being one of the most sympathetic Suzukis I have ever heard.

Cons:

  • This recording only includes Butterfly's music (which, of course is most of the opera.) The only section missing from Butterfly's part is the music after the Flower Duet.
