Wagner: Tannhäuser - Esser, Jones, Jones, Weikl, Sotin, Mazura; Davis. Bayreuth, 1977
$14.95
Description:
Dame Gwyneth Jones takes on the rare challenge of performing both Elisabeth and Venus in this performance of Tannhäuser, and she rises to the occasion with characteristic fearlessness. She contrasts the purity and devotion of Elisabeth with the seductive intensity of Venus, delivering a vocally and dramatically compelling dual portrait that few sopranos would dare attempt.
Bernd Weikl is a standout as Wolfram, bringing warmth, dignity, and seamless vocalism to one of Wagner’s most lyrical roles. Hans Sotin lends his sonorous, authoritative bass to the Landgraf, anchoring the ensemble with stately presence and vocal depth.
Hermin Esser, in the title role, unfortunately falls short of the mark. His interpretation lacks the fervor and nuance the part demands, making him the weak link in an otherwise distinguished cast.
