Franz Mazura, well known for his portrayals of great character baritone roles like Alberich and Klingsor, takes on Wotan in this rare performance, demonstrating his ability to carry an entire evening both dramatically and vocally. He tackles the notoriously difficult role with commanding security, a testament to his solid vocal technique. What makes this performance particularly special, however, is his remarkable commitment to the text. Wotan's monologues come across as true monologues, conversational in nature, and enhancing the storytelling during moments that could otherwise feel like lulls in the drama.

Rita Hunter makes Brünnhilde's music sound effortlessly beautiful, infusing her vocalism with a Mozartian lyricism that contrasts wonderfully with the Wagnerian intensity of the role. Nadine Denize leaves a strong impression in her brief appearance as Fricka. Under the direction of Alain Lombard, the orchestra is full of warmth and lyricism, adding a rich, emotional layer to the performance.

There are two small breaks in the recording—one during Wotan's Act II monologue and another during his Act III monologue—but these do not detract from the overall impact.
