Offenbach: Les Contes d'Hoffmann - Simoneau, Danco, London, Capecchi; Schoenen. Wien, 1954

$9.95

Description:

Any successful recording of Les Contes d'Hoffmann hinges on the strength of the tenor in the title role, and here, the great Léopold Simoneau steps into the part. Having only known his artistry through his outstanding Mozart recordings, I initially doubted whether he could capture the poet's tormented passion. While his voice may lack the dramatic punch of some of his peers, he compensates with remarkable grace and flawless technique. I can’t think of another tenor who could sing with such tonal purity without ever sounding weak or lacking in presence.

Suzanne Danco shines in the dual roles of Giulietta and Antonia. Antonia’s part is better suited to her lyric voice, and she surprises with a touch of spinto, particularly in the final trio, where she soars effortlessly to a stunning high C-sharp. George London is near-perfect as the four villains, delivering a masterful blend of baritone richness and bass weight. His "Scintille, diamant" is suave and seductive, yet he darkens his tone with chilling effect when the role demands true malevolence.

As a bonus, Renato Capecchi delights as Spalanzani, adding an extra layer of charm to the recording. The sound quality is good, though this transfer from LPs includes the occasional scratch.
