Even among a cast brimming with star power, it's Edda Moser who steals the spotlight. As Fiordiligi, she delivers a performance of remarkable fire and finesse, negotiating the coloratura with ease and infusing her interpretation with a dramatic urgency more typical of heavier roles. The result is one of the most compelling portrayals of the character in memory. Brigitte Fassbaender proves an ideal vocal partner, matching Moser in both richness of tone and dramatic presence. Eberhard Wächter, always a model of style, brings a suave elegance to Don Alfonso. And although he was well into his ninth decade, Karl Böhm draws vibrant, youthful playing from the Vienna Philharmonic, keeping the entire performance energized and taut.

Fine Performance With Singers Not Recorded Elsewhere in These Roles!
Edda Moser had a deservedly high reputation as a Mozarr singer when this performance was recorded (1976). She was a terrific Donna Anna and a thrilling Queen of the Night among other roles. She never got around to recording Fiordiligi though. Both of her arias are superb, the triplets clean and neat, the oft-omitted trills securely in place. The duets with Fassbaender are lovely, the two singers listening to each other and blending seamlessly.The rest of the cast is also exceptional. Fassbaender was always a great Dorabella (a pity Böhm cuts her aria in the second act). Holm is a delectable Despina, another singer heard in a role she didn't get to record in the studio. Alva is good though his tone by this point wasn't as steady as it had been (he is still with us at 97). Helm shows why he was so popular in Vienna and Wächter has a high time with Alfonso though his tone too is not as steady as one might wish. Böhm offers his usual sumptuous accompaniment albeit with all his cuts too.This recording derives from an in-house tape so the voices are a little recessed. The tapist has some difficulty settling down during the overture; fortunately, he is mostly quiet during the singing. A must for Moser and Holm fans!

The cast is half of the Böhm/Schenk Première, replacing Janowitz with Moser, Schreier with Alva and Weikl with Helm. This alternatives are very interesting and surprisingly well. Moser is really remarkable as a dramatic coloratura soprano, Alva sounds as elegant as expected and Helm, who dies some months ago at the age of 90, is even more sweet and elegant than in my memories of at least 50 performances in very different roles. The three are well matching with the strong appearance of Fassbaender and the impressive automnous performances of Waechter and Holm, for long years the best in their roles.We know Böhm, his severe cuts - standards at this times - and we hear a rather slow, but fluent, "old" and traditional Mozart in a decent sound.
