Gwyneth Jones and James King are about as well-matched as you can get in this performance of Fidelio. They both had the vocal technique to carry them through the daunting technical demands of Beethoven's unforgiving vocal writing. What makes for true magic is the intensity that these titans inject into Beethoven's classical vernacular. Add Leonard Bernstein in the pit, and you get one of the most exciting performances of Beethoven's only opera you are likely to hear. Lucia Popp is a feisty Marzelline, Theo Adam is the sinister Pizzaro and Franz Crass is a likeable Rocco. The sound is very good.
