Purcell: Dido and Aeneas - Troyanos, Vickers, Sciutti, Caplan; Rescigno. 1972

In the aftermath of the early music revolution of the 80s, I think it is time to revisit baroque operas with singers with the stature of Jon Vickers and Tatiana Troyanos. Troyanos as Dido is larger than life in both her queenly bearing as well as her immense grief at the end. She is well matched by Jon Vickers as Aeneas. Although the role does not have the same kind of challenges as the roles that made Vickers famous, he nonetheless lends his trademark intensity and conviction. Graziella Sciutti is luxury as Belinda. The sound is good.
