Cherubini: Medea
Gencer, Bottion, Raimondi, Mazzucato; Franci
Venezia, 1968
$9.95
Description:
Leyla Gencer's voice may not have been to everyone's liking, but even her biggest critics can't discount her ability to completely inhabit a role with searing dramatic intensity even in the face of dizzying technical challenges. These qualities make for a Medea for the ages and although hers may lack the humanity that Maria Callas brought to the part, she makes up for it with oversized Greek emotion. It is a shame that Aldo Bottion's Giasone is so wooden by comparison. Although his singing is certainly admirable, I wish she could have been paired by someone like Vickers who could match her. Ruggero Raimondi is quite good as Creonte. The sound is very good.
