Pros:

  • When thinking about Alfredo Kraus, one generally thinks of astonishing displays of vocal pyrotechnics, however this performance shows that he was more than just a pretty voice and excellent technique. His Werther is nuanced, passionate and deeply personal. His connection to the text is such that you never get the sense that he is thinking about the vocalism. Instead every sound he makes seems as if it is an extension of the expression of the character. His death scene in particular is chillingly moving.
  • No doubt he was inspired by having the dynamic stage actress, Joy Davidson, by his side. The chemistry between the two is clear.

Cons:

  • There is a buzz throughout the performance.
