Tristan und Isolde (Extended Excerpts)
Pauline Tinsley proves that, even nearing the end of her career, she remains an Isolde for the ages. Her vocal mastery and emotional depth continue to captivate, bringing an unforgettable portrayal to the role. Manfred Jung brings a unique, boyish quality to the role of Tristan, offering an interpretation that, though incongruous at first glance, adds a fresh perspective to the character and invites a rethinking of the part. Sandra Walker delivers an excellent performance as Brangäne, while Hans Sotin mesmerizes as King Marke, embodying the character's tragic grandeur with exceptional skill.
Although these are excerpts, most of Tinsley's part is complete, ensuring that her performance is well represented.

Tinsley is Terrific!
This two disc set gives us Isolde's entire role (aside from her offstage "Tristan! Geliebter!" in Act Three) to the exclusion of all other roles; even Brangäne's Watch in the middle of the Act Two love duet is omitted. But these discs are a must for fans of Tinsley who proves yet again that she could sing just about anything extremely well. Despite my best efforts I wasn't able to discover the date of this performance, not even in which decade. I'm going to assume it was at some point during the 80s.Tinsley is scorching in her fury during the Act One monologue, sarcastic and caustic during her confrontation with Tristan, and then transforms her voice into one of loving acceptance during Act Two. Her tone never wobbles, she never misses a high note, the Liebestod is very beautiful. The other singers are all very good. Jung was probably not meant by Nature to sing the eponymous hero, yet he holds his own with Tinsley. Sandra Walker is an excellent Brangäne (a pity her Watch is missing). Andy writes that Sotin is mesmerizing as Marke and I'm sure he was - except there's not a note of his on these discs. Fortunately, he can be heard elsewhere in this role. Mund leads very capably though I can't evaluate his conducting with so much of the opera missing.The voices are a little recessed, but certainly audible; Tinsley fans won't mind.
