Wagner: Tristan und Isolde - Wenkoff, Ligendza, Minton, McIntyre, Ridderbusch; C. Kleiber. Bayreuth, 1976
$12.95
Description:
Given that Tristan und Isolde was one of the few operas Carlos Kleiber conducted regularly, it is fortunate that several recordings exist to document his interpretation. Most of these feature Catarina Ligendza as Isolde. Her voice, though lighter than many who take on the role, is managed with admirable control and stamina, allowing her to carry the part through to the end with poise.
For me, the true centerpiece of these performances is Spas Wenkoff as Tristan. His voice has a burnished quality, and his breath control is nothing short of extraordinary. He brings a tortured emotional intensity—never strained vocally—that fits the role perfectly. Kleiber’s conducting is consistently fresh and inspired, revealing nuances that set these performances apart from the more familiar DG release. The sound is excellent.
