Liebestod Compilation
My journey from casual listener to lifelong devotee of Richard Wagner began when I was 14 years old. While browsing a record store, I happened upon a compilation that included the Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde. I had never heard anything so emotionally overwhelming, and that moment ignited an obsession with Wagner’s music—Tristan in particular—that has only deepened over time.
This compilation brings together twelve remarkable interpretations of the Liebestod, each offering a unique vocal and emotional perspective. Featured are performances by Astrid Varnay, Ingrid Bjoner, Helga Dernesch, Ludmila Dvořáková, Rita Gorr, Gladys Kuchta, Anja Silja, Catarina Ligendza, Martha Mödl, Ursula Schröder-Feinen, Amy Shuard, and Birgit Nilsson—a lineup that reflects the vocal range, interpretive depth, and dramatic intensity that this sublime closing scene continues to inspire.
