Gertrud Grob-Prandl is radiant as Isolde, her gleaming soprano soaring above the orchestra with remarkable ease. The La Scala Orchestra, under the baton of Victor de Sabata, delivers a performance of such refinement and intensity that it rivals any German ensemble in this repertoire. Paolo Montarsolo makes a notable debut as the Steuermann.

That said, Max Lorenz's tendency to sing sharp may be a distraction for some listeners.
