It's so easy to take Nilsson and Windgassen for granted as the two eponymous lovers in Wagner's opera. They always sang these roles well. They are in top shape here. The rest of the cast is equally good. Hoffman sings a beautiful Brangäne, lighter of timbre than she would be later on in her career. Her Watch is one of the highlights of the performance. Neidlinger is always distinctive and Rohr is a good Marke whose rather flinty voice was probably just past its prime at this point. Rodzinsky wasn't known for his work in opera so much as for his symphonic work, but he leads a passionate performance that never rushes, but never sounds drawn out either. He makes the traditional cut in the Act Two love duet.The sound is excellent, a few brief moments of radio noise aside. The break between discs one and two is as good as it can be since Rodzinsky's tempi are just a little too slow to accommodate all of Act One on one disc.Recommended to all Tristan lovers or fans of the singers.
