Jess Thomas, still early in his transition into heavier Wagnerian territory, offers a fresh and honey-toned Tristan, his lyric tenor retaining its warmth and pliancy before later years took their toll.

Martti Talvela delivers a deeply moving King Marke, distinguished by his noble restraint and sonorous authority. The Vienna Philharmonic plays with characteristic sheen and virtuosity, and the engineering allows the orchestral detail to shine.
