Wagner: Tristan und Isolde - Lindholm, Nuotio, Minton, Cold; Gielen. Amsterdam, 1974

$9.95

Description:

This partial performance of Tristan und Isolde captures Swedish soprano Berit Lindholm at the absolute peak of her vocal powers, presented in remarkably clear stereo sound. Emerging as Birgit Nilsson began to step back from the most demanding Wagnerian repertoire, Lindholm proves a worthy successor—matching Nilsson in vocal intensity while adding her own brand of luxurious lyricism. Pekka Nuotio makes a strong impression as Tristan in Acts I and II, singing with stamina and emotional involvement, though it is unfortunate that his Act III monologue—the ultimate test for any Tristan—is missing. Yvonne Minton lends warmth and elegance to Brangäne, rounding out a strong cast. Despite the omission, the performance remains an important and satisfying document of Lindholm’s artistry.
