Tristan und Isolde – Act III
The idea of breaking up the acts of Tristan und Isolde has been around for many years. In this performance of Act III, it particularly benefits the Tristan, Ronald Dowd, who, despite the lyric nature of his voice, gives the performance his all while sounding as fresh at the end of the act as he sounded at the beginning. Isolde has little to do in Act III other than the Liebestod and Amy Shuard delivers the famous finale with opulence and freshness of tone. Michael Langdon makes much of Marke's few lines and Robert Tear manages to nearly steal the opening scene as the Shepherd. Sir Colin Davis' approach is definitely on the slow side, highlighting Tristan's torment. I was rather surprised as his Mozart recordings are among some of the sprightliest I have come across.

Ronald Dowd stays the course
Few tenors singing the mortally wounded Tristan in Act III have sounded as emaciated as Ronald Dowd does here. His tone eventually takes on more robustness (but not color) and he sustains the rigors of Wagner's vocal endurance test better than some brand-name Tristans one could mention. On the whole, he stays the course admirably, if with some conservation of his resources. Donald Bell is a routine Kurwenal, Janet Coster an urgent Waltraute and Michael Langdon is imposing in King Marke's few utterances (Robert Tear contributes a cameo as the Shepherd). Colin Davis steers the proceedings with a masterly hand. While Amy Shuard is only heard briefly as Isolde, Opera Depot compensates with an extensive set of Wagnerian excerpts featuring Shuard, including a glorious Immolation Scene. In all, a valuable pendant to Opera Depot's complete Shuard/Dowd Tristan und Isolde, also helmed by Davis.
