Wagner: Tannhäuser - Kozub, Hillebrecht, Kehl, Nurmela, van Mill, Kollo; Wallberg. Venezia, 1969
$14.95
Description:
Ernst Kozub may be one of the great "what-ifs" of 20th-century opera, but his performance here as Tannhäuser is nothing short of revelatory. His voice, both beautiful and dramatically incisive, meets every demand of what may be Wagner's most punishing tenor role, inviting comparisons to Lauritz Melchior. Hildegard Hillebrecht, while not the most charismatic performer vocally, contributes a pure, steely tone that serves her well in the youthful Wagnerian repertoire. The chorus, singing in Italian, deserves special mention for their musicality and precision. A young René Kollo also makes a strong impression as Walther.
The sound quality is generally good, though Act II is somewhat muffled compared to the rest of the performance.
