Wagner: Siegfried - Windgassen, Nilsson, Adam, Wohlfahrt, Böhme, Köth; Suitner. Bayreuth, 1967

$14.95

Description:

Otmar Suitner once again takes the podium in place of Karl Böhm, and his reading of Siegfried proves every bit as compelling as his more widely known counterpart. The pacing is fluid, the orchestral textures clear, and the drama finely judged throughout.

Wolfgang Windgassen is an indefatigable Siegfried, tossing off the punishing tessitura with heroic assurance. Yet he also brings unexpected tenderness to the reflective moments, making this one of his more complete portrayals of the role. Birgit Nilsson brings her trademark vocal blaze to Brünnhilde’s awakening in Act III, making a major impact despite her brief appearance. Erwin Wohlfahrt delivers a standout Mime—both sly and vocally refined—rising well above caricature and investing the character with depth.

There is some very mild and occasional static in Act III, but it remains an impressive capture of a thrilling performance.
