Wagner: Siegfried (Act III) - Svanholm, Flagstad; Furtwängler. Milano, 3-24-1950

$5.95

Description:

We all know and love the Furtwängler Ring Cycle from la Scala that has circulated for decades. This recording offers a fascinating glimpse of one of the other performances from that same 1950 run—specifically from March 24. Set Svanholm and Kirsten Flagstad offer definitive portrayals of Siegfried and Brünnhilde, each bringing vocal authority and expressive nuance to their respective roles. Wilhelm Furtwängler’s conducting defies easy categorization—his vision of Wagner is simultaneously expansive and focused, making for a riveting experience. While the sound is not quite as strong as some of the more familiar broadcasts from this run, it remains very listenable for its era.

Note: The recording begins just after the Wanderer’s exit.
