Düsseldorf may not be the first city that comes to mind when considering Europe's great opera centers, but this performance of Siegfried proves that its artistic forces can more than hold their own. With a strong cast of seasoned Wagnerians and an orchestra that rises admirably to the opera's formidable demands, this is a performance of notable strength and vitality. Under the deft baton of Günther Wich, the reading is surprisingly sprightly, balancing clarity and momentum throughout Wagner's sprawling score.

Hans Hopf may not bring youthful color to the title role, but his experience and vocal security—especially impressive given he was nearing 60 at the time—make for a reliable and committed Siegfried. Leif Roar brings refined lyricism to the Wanderer, offering a vocal elegance and a strikingly secure top range that is rarely heard in this role. Berit Lindholm, in her brief but radiant appearance at the opera's close, steals the show with gleaming high Cs and a beautifully shaped "Ewig war ich".

The sound is generally pretty good, though there are around eight brief drop-outs throughout the performance.
