This seems to be the amazing 1962 recording which was in the record stores back before you could buy CDs. You know, frisbee-sized vinyl you played with a turn-table and a needle-arm. Having started with this one--the tip-top-- I've had nowhere to go but down, when it comes to recorded PARSIFALs.Andy's review covered some of the singers, but left out George London, who is absolutely terrifying as Amfortas, roaring in pain like a gigantic lion in a trap. Hans Hotter's Gurnemanz takes some getting used to, but once you remember that his geriatric sound and intermittent wobble are appropriate to the character (yammering old codger), it's not a problem, and, he portrays the loyal, sympathetic, avuncular personality very well. Gustav Neidlinger is, well, Gustav Neidlinger. The ultimate self-mutilated super-villain. And Martti Talvela in his prime sings Titurel with limitless depth. Kna conducts the chorus of knights with discipline and sensitivity. Two special treats, cherries on the sundae, are Gundula Janowitz and Anja Silja as super-sexy flower-maidens.
