Parsifal

This performance of Parsifal comes together in a way that unifies both the drama’s intensity and its deeply contemplative character. Under the guidance of André Cluytens, Wagner’s score unfolds with an acute sense of atmosphere, balancing ritual gravity with moments of quiet luminosity and latent tension.

Sándor Kónya brings a sweet-toned Parsifal whose guileless purity is convincingly sustained, yet whose voice can summon unexpected strength in the more confrontational passages of Act II. Rita Gorr offers a Kundry of remarkable vocal amplitude and color, at once seductive and fractured, her trajectory shaped toward the possibility of redemption. Wagner might have been unsettled by Boris Christoff’s imperfect German, but his Gurnemanz is nonetheless commanding, delivered with magisterial authority and narrative weight. Making her La Scala debut, Montserrat Caballé appears among the Flowermaidens, her presence already hinting at the excellence that would soon define her career.
