Parsifal

Gwyneth Jones delivers a gripping portrayal of Kundry, surpassing even her acclaimed performance in the Deutsche Grammophon release from the following year. Under Horst Stein's spacious and emotionally astute direction, Jones has the room to fully explore the role's volatility and nuance. Her blood-curdling screams—one of which is included in the sample—are unforgettable, a stark reminder of a time when singers were unafraid to push themselves to the brink for dramatic effect.

James King is an ideal Parsifal: vocally luminous, dramatically committed, and musically sensitive. Franz Crass's Gurnemanz may lack some of the theatrical edge of other interpreters, but his finely shaded monologues offer deep insight and refinement.

I can only agree with the other reviewers. This is a superb performance with Dame Gwyneth at her absolute electrifying best, along with an outstanding cast and a good quality recorded sound. Very highly recommended.

A Stunning (!) perfomance!

All us that have been really impressed with the overwhelming beauty and intensity of Gwyneth Jones in the DGG realease of the Boulez Parsifal Bayreuth 1970, did perhaps think that nothing could surpass that. But I agree totally with the earlier reviewers. This might be the most magnificent by Jones ever captured in a recording! The voice flows effortless from the must subtle pianissimos to the breathtaking outbursts in the end of act two. Simply stunning! This is a "must have" for Gwyneth Jones fans. The rest of the cast is as good as in the DGG set. Crass sings beautifully and with much love. King's stiffness makes him sound more like Siegmund than the vulnerable Parsifal, but he is reliable and firm. Stein makes the piece flow naturally, and the soloists, especially Jones, are able to express Wagners intentions without any hindrances from exaggerations of tempi and volume.

Exquisite Gwyneth Jones

This performance has an especial meaning for me as I attended this performance on my very first visit to Bayreuth as a teenager. Seeing Wieland Wagner’s production was truly life changing. And I am not erring in my senescence to call Jones’s Kundry exquisite. Amazingly fresh voiced and vulnerable rather than a raddled temptress. Coupled the tonal beauty and verbal acuity of Crass and Stewart with the eager insight of James King this casting could hardly be bettered. The conducting of Horst Stein is not especially insightful but in the good Kapellmeister tradition. The sound is good for the era and I would recommend FLAC format.
