Parsifal – Acts 2 & 3
Georg Solti leads this performance with commanding presence, drawing a spacious yet articulate reading from the orchestra. His pacing is deliberate, never sluggish, and his attention to phrasing and detail feels deeply tied to the dramatic arc of the work. Among the singers, Gottlob Frick offers an impressive Gurnemanz, his authoritative bass colored with surprising tonal warmth. Fritz Uhl, in the title role, acquits himself vocally with clarity and strength, although his somewhat stiff dramatic presence creates a degree of detachment from the unfolding narrative. Amy Shuard makes a vivid impression as Kundry, shifting persuasively between seduction and anguish.
This release replaces OD 11185-2 and features corrected pitch.

Great Performance in Excellent Sound!
I purchased this in Opera Depot's last incarnation (#11185) and thought it was terrific then. This newer version claims to be pitch corrected. Since my older copy is out in storage and I don't have access to it right now, I can't compare them, but this set sounds excellent. Certainly the singers all sound like themselves.Solti conducts with more fluidity, less self-indulgence than he did in his famous Decca studio set from a few years later. The pacing is excellent; I was never bored as can happen sometimes with this opera. The singers are all first-rate. Uhl is a strong Parsifal, Frick a memorable Gurnemanz. Shuard graces us not only with her lovely singing, but she performs all of Kundry's shrieks, unusual in a concert performance. All right, she doesn't do the last one in Act Two (when Parsifal razes Klingsor's castle to the ground), but most Kundrys leave that one out. Shaw and Kraus are more than adequate and the Flowermaidens (look at those names!) make a lovely group; they're surely not listed in order above. Highly recommended to all Parsifal lovers!
