Parsifal – Act I
Erich Kleiber brings his distinct interpretive insight to Wagner's final opera, leading the orchestra of the Teatro Colón in a performance that reveals both grandeur and restraint. His command of pacing and color allows the score to unfold with clarity, while the ensemble responds with finely etched playing. Torsten Ralf proves well-suited to the title role, his tenor balancing strength with lyrical sensitivity. Though Kundry's role in Act I is limited, Rose Bampton manages to make an impression, particularly in her final lines before the scene shift. Some pitch inconsistencies in the original master have been corrected as much as possible.

Fine Performance, Good Sound!
Kleiber's slow and measured pacing of this act makes one wonder how the entire performance went. His Prelude takes over 15 minutes to play, yet it never sounds too slow or muddy. Similarly, his direction of the processionals into and out of the Temple scenes is simply magical.His cast has some of the best singers of these roles at the time (1946). List's rather gravelly tone suits Gurnemanz's monologues very well (a substantial chunk is cut out of one of them). Janssen sings beautifully, if without some of the pain other interpreters have brought to the part. Ralf and Bampton are good, but we don't get to hear enough of them to accurately evaluate their portrayals. Bampton almost speaks some of her role (Wagner may well have approved). I think the chorus sings in Italian.The sound is certainly listenable. There are some "pitchy" moments, but Andy has done a good job of smoothing things out. There was some minor file corruption on the second disc that comes and goes; it sounds like it derives from the original source rather than the disc that was playing. In any case, it's quiet and not that annoying.For Parsifal lovers
