Lohengrin

In many respects, this ensemble of Italian singers captures Wagner's innate lyricism more naturally than many German-born casts—an observation offered with all due respect to the great German interpreters of the repertoire. Giuseppe Giacomini is superb in the title role, navigating Lohengrin's high-lying phrases with both security and elegance. Maria Chiara brings a velvety richness to Elsa's music, while Bianca Berini delivers a fiercely compelling Ortrud. The only drawback is the sound, which suffers from a noticeable echo that slightly mutes the impact of an otherwise exceptional performance. Still, the vocalism on display is more than enough to warrant attention.

Lohengrin an Italian Opera?

Patane conductes with italianeta, italien conductores seem to have a special relation to Lohengrin, Erede in Bayreuth, Abbado in Vienna. Giacomoni and Chiara are very good in their roles.

Lohengrin with Giacomini, Chiara, Patane

The performance is excellent, particularly Giacomini, but the sound demands a lot of enthusiasm and tolerance. Still, I enjoyed it immensely.

Wagner in Italian

Like Andy, I am a fan of opera in the “wrong” language. This performance of one of my favourite operas is hugely enjoyable. I like Giacomini very much. Hearing such an Italianate sound in Wagner is always great. Chiara to my ears can sound slightly under pitch at times but the Italian sound again is very appealing in this most Italianate of Wagner’s operas. Berini is terrific as Ortrud. Of course it’s possible to find a bad Ortrud, but what a role. It must be such fun and she is great. The rest of the cast is good. Sound quality OK.It’s a pity that Wagner in Italian is not so common these days. I can think of some singers I would love to hear in this repertoire.

Despite the usual cuts a revealing performance

The singing is overall EXCELLENT. Far superior to the German singers from the period. Exceptionally well conducted. It's unfortunate that operas sung vernacular languages have fallen out of favor. Many great singers eschew much repertoire because of this.

Great cast , poor sound

I bought this mainly for Chiara as Elsa and the underrated Bernini as Ortrud; if you can listen through the poor sound it’s a great performance by all the cast and interesting to hear Wagner’s arguably most Italianate Opera in Italian . The sound seems As if it’s been run through a programme such as Goldwave to removebthe hiss butends up sounding very tinny. The recent free download of Parsifal from ( Stuttgart Opera in Paris) is another matter and sounds glorious for its age.
