Lohengrin

This performance of Lohengrin is remarkable not only for the exquisite singing but also for the fact that the cast was composed almost entirely of Americans—a rarity in mid-century Wagner performances. Richard Cassilly embodies both the purity and power of the titular knight, bringing a sweetness of tone seldom encountered in Wagner. Eleonor Steber is sublime as Elsa, offering her characteristic warmth, precision, and depth of expression. Margaret Harshaw’s dark Ortrud and Walter Cassel’s tortured Telramund provide a satisfying contrast to the two leads. Julius Rudel demonstrates yet again that there was no style beyond his command.
