Leonie Rysanek & Giselbert Wolfgang Kassel
This concert of extended scenes from Tannhäuser and Die Walküre captures Leonie Rysanek in the prime of her storied career. In the early 70s, her voice began to take on a darker hue, which added warmth and presence to her middle register. This change made her even more effective as Sieglinde, while still maintaining her ability to convey the youthful exuberance of Elisabeth in Tannhäuser. Giselbert Wolfgang Kassel makes an admirable contribution as Siegmund and Tannhäuser, but Rysanek is the clear star of the performance.

A Rysanek Rarity
At a time when the discovery of new Leonie Rysanek recordings has become increasingly rare, this is a real find. Leonie was not fond of the concert stage and of being aware of her audience, but here she is inspired to great heights of beauty, power and emotion in the first Scene of Tannhauser Act 2, starting with a brilliant Dich teure Halle, then the final scene of Walkure Act1, again in primeform, radiant, feminine and totally involved. Tenor (Giselbert) Wolfgang Kassel more than holds his own, providing less vivid, but strong and musical support. The unnamed conductor is full-blooded and exciting. The sound is a little dim - four stars might be on the generous side - and benefits from a treble lift, but the voices in this in-house recording are well caught. I wouldn't want to be without this performance.
