I purchased this performance from Opera Depot a couple of years ago when it was missing the Rhinedaughters scene and the sound was quite messy. There has been significant improvements with more secure pitching and a more complete copy of the performance. That said there still are issues that will not make this a performance for everyone. Unless you're a) a Nilsson Nut, b) a Ring Nut, or c) actually enjoy rough in-house tapes you might want to look elsewhere for your Wagnerian needs.The tapist can't seem to sit still for the first five minutes or so and knocks the mic around until one wants to shake him (the problem is heard albeit briefly in the other acts too). Most of the time the voices are audible, but a ten minute span in Act Two becomes very muffled (perhaps the tapist feared being discovered). This must be one of Nilsson's last Götterdämmerung Brünnhildes. Her pitch is steadier here than in the preceding Siegfried and it would be hard to guess she was 58. Beirer knows his role cold though that doesn't keep him from some sloppy mistakes. He was 65 and still effective. Wimberger is a terrific Gunther (listen to his ringing top F in his address to the Gibichungs) and Ridderbusch is still a formidable Hagen with a beautiful tone. The three Norns are great (I think Gerda Scheyrer could sing anything) as are the Rhinedaughters. Stein keeps the show moving. Not a first Götterdämmerung or even a tenth, but worth the effort to listen through the sonic fog.
