Wagner: Götterdämmerung (incomplete) - Ligendza, Beirer, Ridderbusch, Stewart, Janowitz, Hoffman, Lo. Rysanek; Stein. Wien, 1971

$14.95

Description:

While the sound quality is less than ideal and the performance is missing several sections—including the entire Norn scene at the beginning—this recording offers a tantalizing glimpse into the casting strength of the Wiener Staatsoper in the 1970s. Catarina Ligendza is in excellent form as Brünnhilde, her voice both secure and expressive. Hans Beirer brings a rugged warmth to Siegfried, balancing heroic power with unexpected tenderness. The supporting cast is a testament to the era’s vocal wealth: Karl Ridderbusch as Hagen, Thomas Stewart as Gunther, Gundula Janowitz as Gutrune, Grace Hoffman as Waltraute, and even Lotte Rysanek appearing as Woglinde. Despite the technical and structural limitations, this remains a fascinating document of a golden age in Viennese Wagner performance.

NOTE:
The beginning of each act is missing, most notably the entire Norn scene.
