Götterdämmerung
This set offers a tantalizing glimpse of a Götterdämmerung featuring perhaps the greatest dramatic soprano of the twentieth century. Kirsten Flagstad, though slightly past her peak in 1948, still sings with remarkable assurance—even if the high C in the duet is omitted.
She is joined by Set Svanholm, who is especially compelling in the heroic passages. His vocal coloring at the end of Act I, when he appears in the form of Gunther, is unmatched by any other tenor I've heard. Ludwig Weber, in the prime of his career, delivers a suave yet dark-toned Hagen. Erich Kleiber leads an idiosyncratic but intense performance. One can only imagine how extraordinary a complete version might have been. Missing from this set is the Gutrune of Rose Bampton. Hans Hotter manages to have one line included.

Great Performance, Excellent Sound!
This disc of about an hour's worth of excerpts from Gotterdammerung is marvelous, yet also frustrating as one so wants to hear the complete performance. We should be grateful for what we have and that it's preserved in excellent sound.Most of the excerpts have sections missing from them (i.e. the opening Dawn duet that begins with "Zu neuen Taten", but then cuts abruptly to "Heilige Gotter!". This also happens in the Immolation scene.)Kleiber leads a fiery performance with a particularly fierce final scene. Flagstad is in fine form (she ducks the top C in the Prologue, but that is her only concession to age). Weber is only heard briefly. I love his "Zuruck vom Ring!" and his outraged cry immediately thereafter. The other singers are great, but we hear very little from them.For Flagstad and Wagner enthusiasts.

I do like it, because Flagstad is in her best voice. It's a very rare recording. It's only highlights, there are neither Brunnhilde and Waltraute duet (only final part) nor wedding scene. The sound is good enough for those years. I enjoy listening to it.
