Wagner: Götterdämmerung (Extended Excerpts from Acts I & III) - Varnay, Windgassen, Nienstedt, Alexander; Sawallisch. Köln, 1964

Listen to a Sample:

  • Hearing Astrid Varnay tear through Brünnhilde's music with an astonishing combination of power and ease, it is baffling why she would give these roles up only a year after this performance took place.
  • Wolfgang Windgassen is very good in Act III HOWEVER, I am fairly certain that it is Hans Hopf singing in the Act I. I can't be certain whether or not this is two separate performances or Windgassen stepped in at Act III. If anyone has any clues please post them in the comments below. Regardless, whoever it is singing in Act I does a very good job.

  • None to mention.
