Wagner: Der Ring des Nibelungen (Excerpts) - Varnay, Hotter, Windgassen, Resnik, Vinay, Greindl; C, Krauss. Bayreuth, 1953
$5.95
Description:
One of the pleasures of exploring the many Bayreuth broadcasts of the Ring Cycle from the 1950s is noticing how the cast remained largely consistent, while the conductors changed—demonstrating just how much interpretive weight lies in the pit. Clemens Krauss brings a more traditional approach than Hans Knappertsbusch, yet his reading is full of insight, with clearly articulated orchestral gestures and sharply honed dramatic pacing. Astrid Varnay and Wolfgang Windgassen are both captured in their absolute prime. Hans Hotter’s tone had begun to take on a woolier quality by this time, but he still handles the dramatic peaks with authority. Regina Resnik and Ramón Vinay deliver red-hot performances as Sieglinde and Siegmund.
