This performances marks, as far as I know, the only time Mario Del Monaco sang a complete Wagner opera on stage. It seems as if the music had been written for him. Both the baritonal tessitura and the heroism of the role seem to fit perfectly. And his German is not bad either. It seems like a real shame that he did not try his hand at Tristan. If that weren't enough, you get the Brünnhilde of Anja Silja. Still in her twenties she has no problem conveying the youthful side of the character and she is quite touching in her scenes with Wotan. The sound is just fair.
