This recording of excerpts from Die Walküre captures some of the greatest exponents of Wagner roles from the 1950s and 1960s in excellent sound. By the 60s Martha Mödl’s performances could either be exhilarating or painfully uncomfortable. Fortunately this performance finds her in top form, delivering her unique brand of high-octane vocal expression that few have since matched. Hans Hotter is found in equally impressive form, bringing gravitas to the role of Wotan without the “barky” quality that would intrude on his vocalism later in the decade. Gré Brouwenstijn is an impassioned Sieglinde and kudos must go to Grace Hoffman’s elegantly pointed Fricka. As noted above, the sound is excellent.
